Where to eat, drink and warm up

Melbourne’s food and bar scene shifts beautifully in winter. The rooftop bars make way for candlelit wine bars and fireside pubs, and the menus match the mood perfectly. Think slow-braised pastas, French onion soup, and warming cocktails that feel like a hug in a glass. Speaking of which, our round-up of the best bars in Melbourne is a great place to start your research.

For cocktails, head to Bar Americano on Presgrave Place, a tiny standing-room-only bar that pours some of the city’s finest negronis. If wine is more your thing, Embla on Russell Street is a perennial Melbourne Girl favourite: natural wines, a wood-fired kitchen, and an atmosphere that makes you want to linger all evening.

For a midweek fix that won’t cost you a thing (entry-wise, anyway), the Queen Victoria Market Winter Night Market every Wednesday is genuinely one of the best things you can do in the city right now. Hot chowder in bread bowls, raclette, mulled wine, and a silent disco. It’s a winter institution that never gets old. For more market magic, take a look at our guide to the best markets in Melbourne.

Feed your mind this winter

The National Gallery of Victoria’s Winter Masterpieces is one of Melbourne’s greatest cold-weather traditions, and this year it also brings along the Cartier exhibition. Featuring nearly 400 extraordinary jewellery objects alongside rare archival materials, it runs from June right through to October so you have plenty of time to get there. And as always, entry to the NGV’s permanent collection remains free. If you love exploring Melbourne’s cultural landmarks, don’t miss our list of the 10 best free things to do in Melbourne.

Film lovers, circle August in your calendars. MIFF returns for its 74th year from August 6 to 23, with hundreds of Australian and international films across venues all over the city. From arthouse darlings to late-night cult screenings, there is something for every kind of cinema fan.

Escape the city for a day

Winter is a wonderful time to explore Melbourne’s surrounds. The Yarra Valley is breathtaking on a crisp winter morning, with misty vineyards, open fires at cellar doors, and some of the best pinot noir you will find anywhere in the country. Make a day of it with a long, lazy lunch at one of the valley’s beloved restaurants. For more inspiration on getting out of the city, check out our favourite reasons to visit Victoria’s High Country.

If you are heading out with kids (or just a childlike sense of wonder), Winter Glow at Adventure Park in Geelong opens from June 20. Think art installations, light shows, fire twirling, ice sculpting and even real snow. It is a proper winter day out and well worth the drive.

And for something truly special, the Mansfield Lantern Festival in the High Country is one of Victoria’s most beautiful winter traditions. A three-day celebration of light set against alpine surrounds and the perfect excuse for a winter weekend road trip.

What to wear

Melbourne winter means layers, always. Temperatures typically hover between 6°C and 14°C, so a great coat is non-negotiable. The good news? Winter dressing in this city is a genuine pleasure. Think tailored coats, chunky knits, beautiful boots, and a scarf you will treasure for years. For shopping, the Paris end of Collins Street, Emporium, and the hidden boutiques of Fitzroy and Collingwood are your best starting points. We have also put together a guide to Melbourne’s best hidden secrets if you love discovering places most visitors never find.

Melbourne in winter is cold, yes, but it is also cosy, creative, delicious and genuinely alive. Rug up, get out there, and enjoy every minute of it.

Whether you are a born-and-bred Melbournian or visiting the city for the very first time, winter here has a way of surprising you. It is the season that turns a Tuesday night into a memory, a weekend escape into something you talk about for years, and a simple walk through the Botanic Gardens into pure magic. So pull on your favourite coat, make a plan (or don’t), and let Melbourne do what it does best. This city was made for winter!
